Car washes face the same challenge as any other retail business: getting customers’ attention.

Many communities have several car wash sites, each offering different incentives, subscriptions, rewards, perks, and quirks. Fighting for your slice of the loyal-customer pie is no small task — but the right plan and the right partners can deliver a big payoff.

Establishing trust and demonstrating value to customers will encourage them to choose your site over others. This is a critical step that takes place long before delivering a quality vehicle wash experience — and that is where strategic marketing comes into play.

Creating a brand that is synonymous with a clean, shiny car is paramount.

Although it might not always be easy to stand out from the crowd, there is a way to start building a customer base that can make the difference between thriving and just surviving in today’s car wash landscape.

Branding Is The Foundation

An important first step is to establish your brand identity. This is the cornerstone of all your marketing tactics.

Define what makes your car wash unique and emphasize the benefits. Focus on what really sets your business apart and what value your site provides to customers. This could be an innovative system or specialized product that delivers thorough cleaning, eco-friendly practices, or outstanding customer service that vehicle owners won’t find anywhere else.

These details should be part of every aspect of your marketing strategy, helping give customers a memorable impression of who you are and why your business exists, not just what you do.

The Right Signage

Having high-quality on-site and in-bay signage is a key visual element that attracts drive-by customers.

By investing in eye-pleasing illuminated or digital signage, your site will be more visible from a distance and even during high-traffic periods. Branded signs, arches, and menu boards reinforce your image and messaging, clearly displaying your business values, products, and services.

Highly visible, well-thought-out signage is the cornerstone
of successful branding and marketing efforts.

In-bay signage is crucial for providing directions and guidance to drivers as they drive into the wash. It also offers another opportunity to share special messaging or incentives to encourage repeat business.

Branded Merchandise

Another aspect of a strategic marketing plan that often gets overlooked is merchandise.

Creating eye-catching, memorable pieces not only transforms customers into brand ambassadors but also serves as constant advertising for your business. These can include:
•          T-shirts.
•          Car decals.
•          Air fresheners.
•          Keychains.
•          Plush toys.
•          Koozies.
•          Printed materials.

Merchandise is also a flexible marketing tool. You can sell each piece separately for its own revenue stream, or package it with subscriptions or reward programs as an extra incentive for customers.

Proactive Digital Marketing

Maintaining an active digital marketing presence deserves the lion’s share of attention. This may be the first place that potential customers discover a wash and a way to keep people engaged with the brand.

The basics of a strong digital marketing plan should include:
•          A user-friendly, regularly updated website that tells the company’s story with easy-to-find information about your location, prices, reward programs, services, and equipment. Be sure to include easy ways to contact your business via phone, e-mail, and social media so customers can engage with you directly.
•          An active social media presence on popular channels like Facebook and Instagram. Include photos and videos, announce special events, changes to hours of operation, and showcase the facility and employees in fun, engaging ways.

Building A Customer Base

Consistent on-site and digital marketing efforts are invaluable for attracting new customers. But how do you retain them and create repeat business?

Developing custom promotions and the right incentives can drive subscriptions and participation in loyalty programs. These serve dual purposes: encouraging new customers to use your car wash and giving them reasons to keep coming back.

Customer retention can also be facilitated through ongoing pro-motions on a customized mobile app, which can be promoted on social media and the wash’s website.

Think Outside The Bay

The marketing strategies mentioned above are necessary to raise awareness of a car wash. But once the basics are covered, there are additional things that can be added to the marketing mix to continue setting the business apart:

Sponsor local businesses and community events. One way to get a car wash’s name out there is by sponsoring a Little League, bowling, softball, or other local sports team. Getting involved with local festivals, markets, and other events is an effective way to increase brand exposure and help familiarize people with your business.

Host a grand opening or anniversary event. Hosting a grand opening event (for a new business) or an anniversary event is an exciting way to bring in new customers. At these special events, washes can offer limited-time pricing, giveaways, food, or other activities to attract larger crowds. In addition, special events like these are a great way to introduce new services or products.

Offer a free car wash. People like free stuff, right? By offering a free first wash, customers are encouraged to try the service. They can compare the wash to the one they typically use, and if the service stands out, they will return for paid washes. Free washes can be particularly effective incentives during the winter, when washing their car might not otherwise be on consumers’ minds.

Measuring Marketing Success

As with any part of a business, the operator should monitor performance. Keeping an eye on some basic marketing metrics can provide valuable insights into what’s working and what isn’t.

            Key metrics to track:
•          Social media engagement (increases in followers, likes, comments, and shares).
•          Website traffic and form fills.
•          E-mail opens and clicks.
•          Customer feedback (reviews, social media comments, in-person conversations).

Remember, every business and every audience is different, so while there may not be an exact blueprint to copy, a combination of these strategies is sure to make a difference in a business’s marketing efforts.

Work With Trusted Partners

Forming trusted partnerships with industry experts who have the wash’s best interests and business goals in mind can make a huge difference in the wash’s success.

Creating and executing a marketing plan in addition to daily operational duties can feel daunting. But you don’t have to do it alone.
