On Tuesday, November 13, Mandi Brower was named the 2018 Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce Small Business Person of the Year. Brower serves as the chief operating officer of Quality Car Wash and director of corporate stores for the Tommy’s Express Car Wash franchise.
Quality Car Wash first opened in 1969 when Brower’s grandfather and great-uncle opened a two-bay car wash in Holland. Since then, the business has expanded into other brands including car wash developer Tommy Car Wash Systems and national car wash franchise Tommy’s Express Car Wash.
“Not only have we survived, but we’re thriving,” said Brower. “When I started in 2005, we had three locations. Now, we’re opening number seven [a Tommy’s Express Car Wash] in Jenison [Michigan] and will soon be breaking ground on an eighth.”
Quality Car Wash received the Michigan’s Best and Brightest Award in 2018 and was recognized with the West Coast Business Leadership Award in 2016. The company has an 89.6 percent retention rate for team members and its flagship location, located at Waverly Avenue in Holland, washed over 515,000 vehicles during the 2017 calendar year.
The annual award is based on nominations from chamber members and was presented by 2017 recipient Jim Hutt.
“This year’s recipient has built a company culture based on teamwork, service, and innovation,” said Hutt during the award presentation. “In the last five years, a dedication to expansion has more than quadrupled their workforce and led to new locations in Muskegon, Holland, and Grandville [Michigan].”
During her acceptance Brower offered some advice of her own to small business owners and managers: “Do your best and be your best,” she said. “Spend money on training your leaders. They are the foundation of your business.”
