OCTOBER IS FALL CAR CARE MONTH
Building on the success of National Car Care Month in April, and in response to the industry's interest in a seasonal option, the Car Care Council has designated October as Fall Car Care Month to focus motorists' attention on the importance of preparing their vehicles for the upcoming winter months.
"Fall is an ideal time for a vehicle reality check up. Summer vacations are over, students are back in school, and winter is just around the corner," said Rich White, Car Care Council executive director.
New Fall Car Care Month promotional posters and banners have been added to the "Be Car Care Aware" point-of-sale kits. The kit features signage, consumer education materials, and the industry's comprehensive Service Interval Schedule. The Schedule helps consumers track regular vehicle servicing by taking the guesswork out of what vehicle systems need to be routinely inspected and when service or repair should be performed.
As a bonus, shops and stores that purchase the kits will be included in the Find A Shop and Find A Store locators on the www.carcare.org web site, which receives more than 100,000 hits per month. The kit also includes National Car Care Month materials that can be used in April 2006.
CYCLO TURNS 50
The Cyclo polisher has sported virtually the same sleek design and function for the last 50 years. While not a household name, the Cyclo is responsible for the satiny polish of the Air Force One Fleet, glistening vintage Airstreams, nearly all commercial airlines, and automobiles everywhere.
The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum is even reputed to use it to restore and maintain historic aircraft. This year, the company celebrates the 50th anniversary of the tool's production.
Its origins are humble. In the early 1950s, Marvin Warner and Jim Helbig, who worked for a Colorado fixed-base aircraft operation, were restoring a twin engine warplane that had returned from the Middle East. "The skin was very weathered from the sun and sand," Marv Warner recalls. To polish it up, they hired some guys to do it by hand. It didn't really work. Helbig came up with idea of a mechanical polisher that used the same motion as the human hand, without the heat drawbacks of a rotary tool. Warner helped iron out the kinks in the invention and together they built the first functional Cyclo polisher.
From there, a unique Colorado company was born. In late 1954, Cyclo signed a contract with Sears Roebuck Co. to produce the polishers under the Craftsman brand. Sears loved the functionality and performance, but wanted its appearance to meet their design standards. "We sent them a machine and drawings and their industrial designers came up with the look they thought would appeal to consumers," says Marv. By mid-1955, the Cyclo design known today was on the shelves in Sears stores nationwide.

GRACE FOR VETS
Grace for Vets is a program developed to honor all veterans on Veterans' Day by providing them with a free car wash. Founded by Cloister Car Wash & Lube on November 11, 2004, the program is designed to promote Veterans' Day, show support for veterans, and reward them for their service.
Grace for Vets also provides the opportunity for the car wash industry to be recognized on a national level and for each participating car wash company to be recognized on a local level. Last year, Cloister received high praise from the local veterans and received TV coverage on Veterans' Day as well as newspaper coverage on the following day. Radio programs also discussed and promoted the free car wash program for veterans, which provided additional publicity.
Due to this excellent response and publicity, the organizers believe the car wash industry in general will significantly benefit by participating in the program. The plan, therefore, is to expand the program across the nation, and to ask car washes across the USA to participate in Grace for Vets on Veterans' Day, November 11, 2005.

Once signed up, participants will receive a package by e-mail, which has all of the necessary literature and information to make this Veterans' Day car wash program a success.

WASHUSA ON TV
The WashUSA committee has announced that its fundraising event is scheduled to get coverage on CBS' The Early Show on September 23, the day before the national fundraiser to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America. This will be WashUSA's third appearance on the nationally broadcast morning show.
"We are so excited to get a chance to give this great fundraiser this exposure and we are so appreciative to Michael Bass (the producer of the show) and his staff for giving us this time," said WashUSA founder Mark Curtis. "We'll have our WashUSA Team there washing a car in the plaza right outside the studio. It's great fun and a good visual to promote the fundraiser on the 24th."
In several separate statements, the WashUSA committee announced that the following companies had again signed on as sponsors of the fundraiser: Simoniz USA, Bolton, CT; Dultmeier Sales, Omaha, NE; The Professional Car Care B to B Trade Group, Latham, NY; PDQ Manufacturing, Inc., DePere, WI; Sonny's Enterprises, Inc., Tamarac, FL; and Innovative Control Systems, Nazareth, PA.
In addition to this significant vendor support, WashUSA's director national participation, Stuart Levy, reported that several top car wash companies had joined the effort, including Auto Bell, Delta Sonic, Mr. Carwash, Scrub-A-Dub, Joan's, Splash, Terrible Herbst, Waterway, Golden Nozzle, and Carnett's.
Two additional regional directors for the event have been named. They are George Bantly, operation's manager for Mr. Magic Car Wash in Pittsburgh, PA and Chuck Delaney, owner of Allston Car Wash in Allston, MA.

ICA CREATES e-Xpo
The International Carwash Association has announced that its first venture into the virtual tradeshow arena will be dubbed Car Care World e-Xpo 2005. The event takes place November 16-20, 2005 at www.CarCareCentral.com/e-Xpo.
"Building on the brand of the physical Car Care World Expo tradeshow and giving it a playful twist will give this event momentum out of the starting gate," said the ICA's executive director, Mark Thorsby. "We're excited to offer the industry this first-of-its-kind event, which will provide a great new way for car wash operators and equipment suppliers to interact in the online arena."
