The Automotive Oil Change Association announced that David Saddler has taken over as the association’s executive director beginning October 1, 2008. He succeeded Steve Christie who retired at the end of September after 16 years in the position. Saddler worked the past four years for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) in Arlington, VA. The last two years at AAMVA, he was a senior executive of the association and was responsible for a $3 million dollar budget and a staff of 11. He previously held positions with the Security Industry Association and the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association. Saddler holds a B.A. in Communications.

The International Carwash Association has announced that associate executive director Eric Wulf will assume the role of executive director and chief executive officer of the association effective January 1, 2009. Wulf succeeds Mark Thorsby who served as executive director for more than fifteen years. Wulf was hired more than two years ago and was instrumental in the creation of new programs to deliver knowledge and proven best practices to the professional car wash industry. Before joining the ICA, Wulf was the executive director of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity’s national headquarters in Memphis, TN. He has a bachelor’s degree from University of Iowa, a master’s degree in business administration from Union University and holds the title of Certified Association Executive from the American Society of Association Executives. Thorsby will continue to serve as executive director emeritus, while focusing on his role as vice president, consulting services, for the association management firm, SmithBucklin.

3M ACQUIRES DEDICATION TO DETAIL

3M has announced that it recently acquired Dedication to Detail, a Philadelphia-based manufacturer of paint finishing systems including buffing and polishing pads. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition of Dedication to Detail enhances 3M’s range of vehicle appearance products with the addition of patented quick release double-sided foam and wool pads sold under “The Edge” brand.

WASHWORLD FL DISTRIBUTOR

Washworld Inc. of DePere, WI has announced the appointment of Automatic Excellence Inc. as its distributor for the central and west coast portions of Florida. Automatic Excellence has over 50 years of combined experience as both a distributor and car wash operator and offers value-added services such as site evaluation, site design assistance, financial consultation, engineering support, project management, installation expertise, sales and service training, and ongoing marketing support.

FIRST IDA BOARD

The International Detailing Association (IDA) has elected its first board of directors. Based in Portland, OR, IDA had its beginnings with the formation of the Professional Detailing Association (PDA) in 1989.

Eight positions on the board were recently filled, four representing manufacturers and suppliers, and four representing operators. The elected board members are Stephen Romero of US Products, Erik Jefferies of Cyclo Tool Manufacturers, Rick Goldstein of Ragg Topp, Tom Schurmann of Professional Dispensing Systems, Yvan Lacroix of Repare-Brise, Prentice St Clair of Detail in Progress, Antonio Rosiles of Advanced Detailing, and Anthony Flammia of Gia’s Mobile Detailing.

19,726 FREE BROWN BEAR WASHES

There were 19,726 sparkling autos and trucks exiting Brown Bear Car Washes throughout the Puget Sound area August 21 as the company offered free “Bear Essential” washes at its tunnel wash locations in celebration of its 51st anniversary.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to thank our customers and to show our appreciation. Each year the numbers continue to grow,” said Brown Bear founder and owner Vic Odermat, who started his business in 1957. He said 19,001 drivers took advantage of the promotion in 2007 and 14,896 in 2006.

The company plans to make the event an annual affair, offering free washes at its automated tunnel wash locations in the Puget Sound area on the fourth Thursday of every August.

If needed, 2D CAD drawings of belt modules, sprockets, and accessories are available for download. In the near future, 3D CAD drawings will be available for download as well.

CCC HONORED

The Car Care Council has received top national media recognition from North American Precis Syndicate Inc. (NAPS) for two of its consumer radio features entitled “When Your Car Says ‘Wash Me, Please’” and “Hot Weather: The Cause of Car Battery Trouble.” Both radio news releases sparked an extraordinarily high volume of placements by America’s radio broadcasters.

“When Your Car Says ‘Wash Me, Please’” had 916 placements with 68 percent in the leading 50 media markets, and “Hot Weather: The Cause of Car Battery Trouble” had 736 placements with 74 percent in the top 50 media markets. Each of the stories placed in the top one-quarter of one percent of all radio features distributed to the media by NAPS. By comparison, radio features typically generate, on average, 300 to 400 placements, with 400 rarely being reached.

AUTOMATION & POWER EXPO

CAR CARE AWARE MERCHANDISE

The Car Care Council has launched a new online store for branded “Be Car Care Aware” merchandise that can easily be accessed through the council’s website at www.carcare.org or at www.carcaremerchandise.com.

According to the council, the new site was developed to further assist aftermarket companies and organizations celebrate Fall Car Care Month in October and National Car Care Month in April, by making it easier to order promotional items directly from the website. Visitors to the site will find a variety of high-quality items such as t-shirts, mugs, calendars, earth-friendly water bottles and caps, as well as promotional items such as balloons, key chains, pens, calendar magnets, tire gauges, and sticky notes.

FLORIDA DOG WASH

Scrubs Dog Wash, located at 3135 SW 42nd Street, Gainesville, FL, held its grand opening on Saturday, September 13, 2008. The wash uses the Australian made K9000 Self-Service Dog Wash that allows dog owners to wash their pets at a fraction of what groomers charge.

For $10, dogs can be washed, rinsed, disinfected, and dried in a matter of minutes. It’s all done in an easy to use self-contained, self-serve unit keeping the dog happy and safe.
