Motor City Wash Works held its ninth annual Open House and Charity Auction to benefit St. Jude Children’s

Hospital Wednesday and Thursday, August 9 and 10. More than $1 million worth of equipment was up for auction during the event, with actual purchases enabling a record-setting $102,000 donation for St. Jude. This impressive figure far exceeded the organizers’ goal of $75,000.

A mix of operators, distributors, and manufacturers made up the total attendance of roughly 200. More than 20 manufacturers participated in the charity auction, while over 200 car washes were represented.

A welcome reception in the late afternoon on Wednesday at the Volt Bar got the event started. Next, attendees were taken out to the ballgame, treated to a night in box seats at Comerica Park for a Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates matchup. In what was perhaps an omen of good fortune to follow, the home team won. Before calling it a night, many availed themselves of the opportunity for more networking time with their peers at various nightspots around town.

The Motor City Wash Works factory doors opened at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday for the open house, which, in addition to tours of the plant, featured a buffet lunch. Duly informed and nourished, attendees moved to the historic Gem theater in downtown Detroit for the main event: the charity auction for the benefit of St Jude Children’s Hospital. Those present could bid on the equipment and services participating manufacturers had donated for the event, but they also had the opportunity to acquire one of a number of paintings done by actual St. Jude’s patients, a lasting memento of an afternoon spent in support of a worthy cause.

Following the auction, the “After Glow Party” at the Park Bar, brought the open house to a close. Here, organizers, participants, and attendees alike could celebrate a successful event, which keeps getting bigger and better every year. This year’s result is a formidable achievement that will take some doing to best.
