After more than 16 years in Las Vegas, the Western Carwash Association is moving its convention and tradeshow to California. The 2011 event takes place at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego October 17-19.

The new venue offers the largest potential drive-in market of attendees in the country. Aside from its attractive setting on San Diego Bay, the convention center is just across the street from the famous Gas Lamp District, placing scores of hotels and hundreds of restaurants and nightclubs within walking distance.

Dual-track sessions — self-service/conveyor — again make up the educational programming. Returning, however, to a pattern abandoned two or three years ago, seminars are for the most part not scheduled concurrently with exhibit hours.

The general session on Monday, October 17 kicks off with a presentation by Brandon Webb, a former U.S. Navy SEAL. He is a co-author of The 21st Century Sniper (Skyhorse Publishing) and his memoir, tentatively titled “The Red Circle” (St. Martin’s Press) is set for release in 2012.

The highlight of the social calendar is probably the Midway Extravaganza, scheduled for Tuesday evening. The Midway is a decommissioned aircraft carrier, permanently docked in the San Diego harbor as a floating museum and attraction containing aircraft, flight deck, simulators, etc. WCA will hold this once-in-a-lifetime event complete with catered food, tours, and entertainment.

For more information, visit www.wcwa.org or call the Western Carwash Association at (800) 344-9274.
