WCA HONORS SONNY FAZIO

Sonny Fazio, founder of SONNY’S The Car Wash Factory, has been honored by the Western Carwash Association (WCA) with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Created to recognize and honor the lifetime achievements of an individual or manufacturer that has made an invaluable and measurable impact on the past, present, and future of the car wash industry, the award was presented, in absentia, on October 18 at the WCA Convention and Tradeshow in San Diego, CA.

Getting his start in the car wash business as an owner/operator of a full-service car wash in 1949, Fazio’s extensive career in the industry turned to the supply side of the business in 1978 when he founded Sonny’s Enterprises. “If you had told me 62 years ago, when I opened my first full-serve car wash, that I would be receiving an award like this I’d have told you you were crazy,” said Fazio. “I never meant to manufacture car wash equipment or sell replacement parts, let alone become the largest in the world.” Fazio concluded with these words: “This industry has given me much more than I have given to it, and for that, I thank you.”

UNIONIZED CAR WASH

At the end of October, labor leaders announced that workers at the Bonus Car Wash on Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica had become the first in Southern California to unionize.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the labor agreement with Bonus Car Wash covers only 30 workers and calls for a modest 2 percent raise. The greater significance, according to labor experts, lies in the establishment of procedures for hearing workers’ grievances, the creation of standardized rules on wages and hours, and requirements for any new owners of the car wash to abide by the contract.

Already negotiations for similar agreements are underway with three small Los Angeles car washes, according to labor organizers.

CCA HONORS STATE REP

The Connecticut Carwash Association’s 14th Annual Golf Classic, held September 20 at the Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington, CT, honored State Representative Jason Rojas with its 2011 CCA Legislator of the Year Award.

Representative Rojas was presented with a plaque by CCA Lobbyist P.J. Cimini and association president Todd Whitehouse.

“Jason Rojas has been a strong supporter of the CCA and was instrumental in our recent legislative victory which kept sales tax off our car wash services,” said Whitehouse. “He is a true friend of the CCA and extremely worthy of this honor.”
