D&S Car Wash Equipment Company has announces the death of its founder, Lawrence “Larry” F. Scheiter.
With his partner, Scheiter started the company in 1972, capitalizing on the need for higher-quality equipment designed for self‐service car washes such as booms, safes, and coin meters.
D&S was the first company to introduce an all (welded) stainless-steel vacuum to the car wash industry and the first to incorporate solid-state timers in car washing applications. In the mid to late 1980s, D&S developed the D&S 5000, which was the car wash industry’s first roll‐over type touchless automatic car wash system.
Scheiter had a longstanding career in the car wash industry dating back to the early 1960s when automatic and self‐service car washing became the new trend. He was an engineer by trade, a pilot, and a collector who loved airplanes, cars, and boats. In 2004, Scheiter retired and sold the company to a private equity group.
Scheiter passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the age of 79 after a long battle with kidney disease. He is survived by his spouse, Jan; children Julie (Keith) Pearson, Jenie (Chris) Nowark, Lawrence L.T. (Jen Russell) Scheiter III, Debie (Rich) Vigus; sister Barbara (Steve) Lueckie; and many grandchildren.
